A new state commercial building code requiring various energy efficiency measures in new construction and changes to existing buildings goes into effect next month.
The most recent changes include requirements for energy recovery ventilators in all dwelling units, energy monitoring with breakout data for each energy source, outlet control via occupancy sensors for several commercial uses, as well as insulation, mechanical, electrical and plumbing improvement requirements.
However, the biggest change that developers, builders and architects should be aware of is the new requirement for Functional Performance Testing (FPT) and commissioning, according to Eric DeVries, president of Grandville-based energy consulting firm E3M Solutions.
